This is an orphan photograph inspired by the Sutherland Spaceport, a proposal for the UK’s first vertical launch spaceport that was never realised. Sitting in the shadow of Ben Hope at the northernmost edge of the isle, it seemed appropriate that rockets should launch from a site already reaching for the stars. The project was first announced in July 2018, with a planned completion date of 2020.
Unfortunately, the plans were scuppered by a shift in funding to another proposed site in the Shetland Islands. As a result, Sutherland Spaceport now looks unlikely ever to be built. After two site visits in 2018, made in the hope of developing a project, I was left with a handful of orphan images, of which this is one.
I was immediately drawn to this rock formation after driving past it on the A838. The iron staining, presumably, set within a palette of subtle greens and greys, quite literally stopped me in my tracks.
